Has Hip Hop Taking Over the Music Industry?

According to a Nielsen’s 2017 year-end report, eight of the ten most popular artists came from the hip-hop/R&B genre and 6 out of the top 10 albums sales were from the same genre. The growth of hip-hop/R&B genre is believed to be because of a, “72% increase in on-demand audio streaming.” (Nielsen 2018) We definitely love Hip Hop/R&B, and some might say yes, Hip Hop is taking over the music industry. Although, we at The Dial believe all genres are equally important. Personally, I think we should all thank our lucky stars for the advancement of technology to include online audio streaming of music from all genres. How else would we all be able to so easily enjoy so many different genres of music, new and old alike. 

This week we would like to shine a light on Norah Rayn. The area’s talented country singer and songwriter. Influenced by country music icons Reba McEntire and Garth Brooks, Norah found her passion for music at a young age. She started singing in her church choir and joining local competitions, she even competed on the TV show, “American Idol.” After years of developing her voice and sound, Norah hosts a music-based summer camp, “Songbirds.” The camp’s focus is to help the area’s youth develop their voices and eliminate stage fright, which is the most common issue among performers. Keep doing your thing Norah, we know she will soon be on your playlist.

Is Grunge Really Dead?

Grunge, became popular in the late 80s, early 90s when a few of the genre's most influential groups: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots, claimed fame during the mainstream grunge movement. The sound can be described as melodic, with gnarly chords bellowing from the electric guitar, intense drumming, and emotionally fueled lyrics.
Now in 2018 we have to ask, Is grunge really dead? To find the answer I had to do some research and hit the local music scene. I am so thankful I did because I would have never found, Elasticity's Last Demand. The area's up and coming Grunge Band. When I first encountered this gritty band's harmonious mixture of distorted guitar riffs, strong drumming, and well thought out lyrics. I needed to know, how did you decide the band's name? The response was simple yet satisfying. "All of life's everyday pressure's and compromises. We had enough and couldn’t fit in any more demands." One of the reasons, Elasticity's Last Demand, holds onto this particular genre is because they feel their lyrics help reach those who have difficulty expressing themselves. Inspired by this concept they even started a support group for those effected by or with emotional issues. This view is quite different from the normal, lack of concern approach, of bands within this genre. After a night with Elasticity’s Last Demand, I continued on my search and found several grunge-like bands emerging on many different local scenes. And I had the answer to our original question. No! Grunge is not dead; this genre has just evolved.

Introducing Rekey

For this week’s blog I would like to let our readers know how our Featured Artist element works. For those of you who don’t, The Dial, plays tracks from all genres of all decades. To simplify this process, we will be concentrating on specific genres weekly.  Our aim is to interest listeners to local talents, musicians that are listeners have not been lucky enough to here.  We will be inviting the featured artist to the studio to record tracks, get advice from area professionals, and network with like-minded individuals. Another goal is to help our artist gain supporters, and broaden their reach to those that would otherwise not know their music.  We know how hard these rising stars are working just to get noticed and we want to help them on this wild adventure. Ultimately, we hope to hear some collaboration out of all this.

 Without any further ado, we would like to introduce.... Rekey, a local MC, making a wave on the music scene. Rekey has a unique sound, you will want to hear for yourself. Hip-hop mixed with the soothing sounds of the strings and funky noises from the synthesizer. 

Not only is this 25-year-old talent bringing a whole new sound to the area, she volunteers her time at the boys and girls club. Rekey developed an innovative workshop for the young men and women there. With the help of music, she is teaching these ladies how to have healthy self-esteems, be team players, and to always believe in themselves.  
Rekey, you truly are an inspiration.
